Garage Door Openers

Chamberlain | Dorion Doors

Often, I am asked countless times as a garage door technician what the best motor is. The answer is always Craftsman, Chamberlain or Liftmaster, hands down. They are all made by the same company, they are reliable and they have a fantastic warranty. These operators usually come with a 7 to 10 year manufacturer’s warranty and generally last anywhere between 15 to 25 years depending if you maintain them and take care of them. You can increase their longevity by also taking care of your garage door as well. Please remember that these motors are there to help lift the door with the help of a spring system. If your spring is broken and you are using your door to lift the full weight of the door you are taking years off the motors life.

While the brands I recommend are a little more expensive and yes you can find cheaper, I ask you this… Is it worth buying an operator at a lower price with a perhaps 2 2-year warranty that may or may not last 1 to 5 years? I’ve had many clients tell me that they’ve bought another brand of operator and low and behold, right after the warranty was finished, so was the motor.

Now and days you can choose between either a chain drive motor or a belt drive motor. The difference between them comes down to a few variables.

First, is maintenance. If you are the type of person that doesn’t want to grease your chain once and a while to keep the noise level down and to keep the chain flowing properly, then I would recommend a belt drive. With the belt drive their is little to no maintenance required.

Second, is sound. The chain drive motor is a tad bit noisier but can handle heavier doors. Whereas the belt drive is extremely quiet but is generally recommended for smaller doors.

And lastly, it comes down to the size of the door. Which factors in also the weight of the door but also the speed at which the door opens. A chain drive motor can handle a heavier door and a relatively good speed. The belt drive can also handle a heavy door but will open it a little slower. Generally speaking, a chain drive motor will be cheaper than a belt drive. So it all comes down to personal preference. Myself, I must say I love the belt drives, they call them ‘whisper’ drives for a reason.
